before microphones got better, was an english saying that popular taste wanted the best singers (ie operatic sucesses) singing the shoddiest popular music....

Very cool!
I remember Gr. 9 Art Class at Holy Name of Mary doing the dot picture based on a magazine picture. It was so difficult.
I was watching this thinking I would be so bothered by my every move being filmed.

Knowing my luck, I'd just get to the end and then the pen would do a great blot over it. Nightmarish!

I thought the exact same thing, HJW. A labor intensive copy that looks like a guy with his face pressed up against a photocopier (which is probably what it's based on).

That is some intense stippling. It can be done to great effect, and a micron is an architect's best friend. (and doesn't really blot)
