After reading George Weigel's review of Tony Blair's autobiography in the Dec issue of First Things, I didn't expect much from the debate. SIGH. Couldn't bring myself to watch/read through the transcript

Blair???? One could argue that he is on the opposing side. Not that I know the state of his soul, of course.
If the Lord does not build the house in vain do its builders labour.
That debate was painful to watch.

It's not about whether Tony B is bright or not. (He's not dumb.)
The point is that his strength is charm and "niceness". But these qualities don't win out in a real debate.
And, of course, debating requires that you know what you actually stand for ...
