Ooof. I've heard the same thing about Szechuan in Germany: the things Chinese food has to do to accommodate itself to the German palate are horrible to contemplate.
Foreigners in Ireland (English and Scots apart) are only from the past 10 or so years - give all the foreign muck a miss and stick to the black pints and black (or white) puddings, which will see you fine.
