Pope Francis prepares for culminating event of World Youth Day[s]

...in the cathedral of Rio de Janeiro.

What does it remind me of...architecturally speaking, I mean...

...

Let's see... what could it be?

I was expecting sort of the mountain thingy from Close Encounters of the Third King.

But if they put a giant, proportional cross on top, that would perhaps redeem it, if you will pardon the pun.

  2. I showed my 14 year old who was passing by and all I told her was this was in Rio and she said she didn't realize the Aztecs were in Rio.
I told her it was a cathedral and all she said was, "That is just wrong! Don't show me the inside!"

I wonder if it was the same architect who put together the St. Home Depot on Bayview Ave in Toronto.

  3. That's the cathedral? The architect must have confused Brazil with 15th century Mexico.

  4. My first thought was "The world's largest dalek!"

But, yeah, Aztecs. I could go with that. (Especially since they forgot the dalek's antenna and the exterminate thingy.)

    Cheers,

Rio's Old Cathedral, Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte do Carmo da Sé antiga (the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel of the Ancient See), is beautiful -- and is the main site during World Youth Day for Mass in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. :)
