Manly singing

Today's musical choice for background noise while I'm working and folding laundry is Eastern Chant.

And as I was listening to it, something interesting popped into mind.

And suddenly I've understood better than before what has gone wrong in the (Latin) Church. Or gone away, more to the point:

Men.

If you like that chant, you should attend the Holy Week services at an Orthodox church. Holy Thursday and Great Friday, in particular, are very arresting. These Lamentations are from the Great Friday evening service. It looks like it's a service at a monastery though; a normal parish may not sound so 'manly.'

  3. Well, perhaps not the Orthodox church. But there's the Russicum, near Mary Major (and more importantly, the train station) that totally has awesome chant. Really amazing.

They're a great cure for getting fed up with religion. One time, I couldn't stand going to Mass any more. Sooo tedious. So a friend of mine invited me up to the Russicum for some kind of chanting thing, maybe it was Divine LIturgy, but I couldn't tell. ANd it was GREAT! I felt freed. I didn't have to do anything. I just sat there and let it wash over me. I looked at the pictures. Awesome.

And when you're done, read this: http://www.firstthings.com/onthesquare/2013/07/solzhenitsyn-and-the-russian-renaissance

Something to ponder while folding those socks.

Why is Orthodox chant so much more manly? Across the board?

Could it possibly have something to do with the fact that the Orthodox don't have mandatory celibacy for priests?

Yes, there are problems all around, but seriously the cover that mandatory celibacy gives to homosexuals and pederasts can even be felt liturgically....

Karen, couldn't agree more. So sick of seeing effeminate ponces prancing about the sanctuary. The issue of mandatory celibacy is a sacred cow that most trads don't want to touch unfortunately.
