Looking longingly at that old Dream Job.
It's come up again.
Puffin-counter on Skomer Island off the Welsh coast. £12,500 for four months "work". Living on the island included.
There are lots of puffins there. They need to be counted.
It's important.

12.5K pro-rata per annum but I'd still do it! Away from the war indeed. A place like the coast of Wales or Northumberland or the Hebrides is delightfully far away from the bacteria in Westminster, but a living must be made somehow.
ReplyDeleteSurely you're my long lost sister.
ReplyDeleteCancer, Traditional Catholicism, paleo-conservatism, and now ornithology. Gotta be genetics.
Anyway, many years ago, as an upstate New York lad, I used to wander around Sapsucker Woods at the Cornell Ornithology Lab, pretending to be Roger Tory Petersen. In college I took a single memorable class in Field Ornithology. It required being up on a Friday at 4:30am to head out to the frozen shores of Lake Champlain in hopes of catching sight of a snowy owl that thought it had reached "south for the winter." I think you got an "A" just for showing up.
Nowadays, I day-dream here: http://www.osnabirds.org/Jobs.aspx
Hey, if the Wales gig doesn't work out, there's always The Society of Yukon Bird Observatories.
I've always loved puffins. Even the name. Puffinpuffinpuffin...
ReplyDeleteI should sign my two high school children up for this. It could be an extended HomeSchool field trip.
ReplyDeleteThen all would be well in my home.
Or maybe I should just apply.
Though I would probably have Hitchcock nightmares about birds.
Oh, I'm sure the Puffins didn't participate in the genocide in that movie. I bet they were all like, "Chill you guys, the humans aren't so bad. They don't really do anything. They just count us."
