I have cancer

so, now that the whole world knows, it may officially go away and stop bothering me.

Update:

Hey everybody. I thought I'd put up a note to say that I'm OK. Had the exploratory surgery last night and it was very brief. I'm going to be staying in the hospital one more night to rest and recover and will be having more tests throughout the week on an outpatient basis. But I'm doing ok and am still maintaining the black sense of humour; the irony shielding is also holding up well. I'll give more news later and really, (yes, really) thank you all for your thoughts and messages and prayers. I can't tell you how much it has meant to me to know that y'all are out there.

Probably not a whole lot of internet things for the next little while.

More news as it comes.

Now that you've got that out of the way, you can go back to normal programming...

I add my prayers too, Hilary.

I have been reading your blog for some months now, keeping your web-page open on my laptop all the time, and just hitting the 'refresh' button daily. I thought of writing to you many times, but somehow I was too shy.

Thank you for your beautiful posts and your beautiful life, which God-willing, will continue for many years to come. I will pray for that.

    Affectionately,
    Marta

    Hilary,

Hooray! Now I get to write that empathetic drivel I was talking about!

On second thought, never mind. I wrote it, but then deleted it. I'm still afraid of being smitten.

Instead, I'll confine myself to saying that your news makes my empathy complete, if you get my drift. It's now my turn to "pay it forward," and I will do unto another as it was done unto me.

This Lent - my Lent - is for you.

    Dear Hilary,

If I had been diagnosed with cancer, I would really, really hope that - if I didn't already know it that - that someone would take me aside and tell me that there have been intense debates among Nobel Laureates one of whom got his prize for his work with cancer, and others of whom devoted years of their life to cancer research, about whether the standard therapies are really the best. Ralph Moss, a Stanford PhD, who formed his own opinions, and worked with them, wrote a book called "The Cancer Industry." These scientists, Lins Pauling, Otto Warburg, and Albert von Szent-Györgyi, were adamant that there were much better ways to go about treating cancer. I would strongly urge you to look into them.

  16. Szent-Györgyi was a reductionist. "We are all leaves on the same treat of life; there's no difference between a king and a head of cabbage."

Why not make cole slaw out of a king?

    Get well soon.

I think you'd like the Church of the Holy Innocents here in NYC where the "Extraordinary Form" Mass in Latin is celebrated every evening at 6pm. That's where I'll be in a couple of hours from now, and I'll be praying for you as I know many people are. Wish I could do more.

  24. Prayers and good thoughts for your recovery.

O God, in St. Peregrine you gave us an outstanding example of faith and patience. We humbly ask you that, by imitating him and by the help of his prayers, we may believe more fully in your healing help, bear the suffering of this life without wavering, and come with joy to the peace of heaven. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

    Amen.

    Hi, Hilary!

As per your instructions re minimal use of saccharine, I'll simply express regret over the diagnosis you got amd my hope that you recover. Plus, I will say a prayer for you.

Hilary, I have been reading your writings for a long time although not commenting often. I will be praying for you and hope that your Catholic writing and good spirit continue in full strength, although it is probably a good idea to rest. And make certain to get the right nutrition and vitamins (I have heard of some stories of cures through nutrition but also miraculous cures, however sometimes there is just the need to suffer as you know.) The soup recipe sounds good that you posted. Please do let us know how you are or if you need anything.
    (Hopefully this passes your criteria...)

    Hi Hilary,

I've been praying constantly for you and checking this blog daily for news. May God continue to give you the strength you need to get through this (and all associated misery).

I thank God especially for your black sense of humor and that irony shielding. Life long adversity has taught me that black humor (the blacker the better) is a crucial survival tool...so glad you have it in spades!

  36. So, other than the cancer, how are you?

I shall keep you in my Lenten prayers and pray that this is over by the end of Lent.

Cancer is a disease like all the others. We know a lot about it. Be aggressive, be tough, and, most of all, beat the beast.
