I have had a message today from a friend in Ontario.
Of your charity, please pray for the repose of the soul of the great Anne Roche Muggeridge, a person who, through her books, had a great influence on many of us.
John and Anne, united at last.
Later, when I feel up to it, I will try to write something of my experiences with Anne and her family.

ReplyDeleteThe Desolate City was one of the most important books ever written, the beginning of the counter revolution (or at least, of my own personal counter revolution.)
Me too. I was given it by a non-Catholic friend for Christmas in 1986. It began my long journey to become the anti-choice homophobic misogynist loon I am today.
ReplyDeleteI discovered that book in the years when I was returning to more consistent practice, parish-shopping, and trying to understand what had happened...I think I came across the "Ratzinger Report" and "The Desolate City" at the same time. Her book left a deep impression. (The critique of Raymond Brown was particularly interesting to read.)

ReplyDeleteI read her book in the mid-1990s, before I became a Catholic, and it was supremely useful (as well as so wonderfully written) for me to enter the Church with my eyes wide open, aware of the problems and struggles. It was also she who put me on to the Toronto Oratorians, for whom I have ever since had great affection and whom I hold in highest esteem.
Wow----I only just months ago read Desolate City and Gates of Hell for the first time.
