From the Matins reading in the (real) Breviary.
Calling the children of Israel to a holy war:
Proclaim ye this among the nations: prepare war, rouse up the strong: let them come, let all the men of war come up.
Cut your ploughshares into swords, and your spades into spears. Let the weak say: I am strong.
I was lied to by a bunch of hippies in Catholic school.

ReplyDeleteJust read that in the "Anglican" [sic] Breviary on the bus home from work yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI was struck by that, too--being a reversal of Isaiah 2:4. The thing is, it's directed to the gentiles, not Israel, so it hit me as being a little more ambiguous--why is the Almighty stirring up the Gentiles to a holy war?
God is basically saying Bring it On. Put 'em up, you nations. Show Me your best. and I will cause all your strong ones to fall down" [Joel 3:12]. and I will sit to judge (declare the truth to, and rule) all the nations round about.
ReplyDeleteAnd then.. Advent :. v. 18 : the mountains shall drop down sweetness and the hills will flow with milk.
