"let her die"

Can someone please get in touch with the authoress of this piece and ask her what she means by the expression?

ROME (CNS) -- An Italian government official intervened to stop a hospital from withholding nutrition and hydration from a woman who has been in a persistent vegetative state for 16 years.

The Dec. 16 decree by Maurizio Sacconi, Italy's welfare minister, temporarily blocked Eluana Englaro's physician and family from carrying out an Italian supreme court decision to let her die.


It is comparable to reporting on a maniac who locks up a child in a shed and starves her to death by saying that he "let her die".

Maybe someone would like to point out to CNS that if you lock a perfectly healthy person in a room, no matter what his mental or neurological state, and refuse to give him any water for two weeks, you are not "letting" that person die.

It is murder.
