I am a Canadian,
a free Canadian,
Free to speak without fear,
Free to worship God in my own way,
Free to stand for what I think right,
Free to oppose what I believe wrong,
Free to choose those who shall govern my country.
This heritage of freedom,
I pledge to uphold,
For myself and all mankind.

Ah, for the days before the Star Chambers, and worse yet the Charter, which made some equals more equal than others.

Whenever I hear someone castigate Diefenbaker's Bill of Rights for having not being enshrined in the Constitution, I point out that was its charm. They stare back uncomprehendingly.

I fear that, in a country which defines itself by the Charter and a vague notion of "tolerance," things as basic as the rule of law have stopped having any resonance.

All the same, awfully fine of you to keep soldiering on with us from our mother across the seas!
