Details

Sometimes you have to look closely to see the big picture.

Yesterday I had a few minutes on my hands and an empty church to wander around in and decided to take a few pictues.

It has struck me that the big grand panoramic photos of beautiful things, whether the great facade of St. Peter's or the Grand Canyon, do not always do enough to convey the qualities that make these things great.

I go to the church of Sanctissima Trinita dei Pellegrini often and I fear I am beginning to not really see it. I think I might be slipping into that indifferent familiarity with the gorgeous and wonderful things around me in this city.

The solution, of course, is to pay closer attention.

It's in the details.

Tranna is in deed a pfilthy pest hole, as I never ceased to observe in the five years I endured it.

Rome is grubby, slovenly, garbage strewn and graffitied to within an inch of its life but somehow it is forgivable.

Thank you, Hilary, for posting these photos. A feast for the eyes and for the soul. We don't produce these anymore, I think. Is it that we now lack the skill? Or do we lack the skill and the cultural, collective will? I wonder sometimes if it will take centuries before such civilized art will return...if we have "centuries" left. Meanwhile, thank you for providing some spiritual "nourishment." Kris
